How do I scan a network target using hostnames?

To run a scan on a network target using the hostnames, please follow these instructions. Notice that you first need to create a scan profile that you use for your scan. This allows you to scan multiple underlying IP addresses belonging to the specific host name. 

  1. Log in to Security Center.
  2. In the main navigation bar, hover over Assessments.
  3. From the dropdown menu that appears, select Scan.
  4. Click New Scan > Network > Vulnerability.
  5. Fill in the General information, enter the following:
    • Name: the name of the scan, e.g., "standard scan".
    • Scan profile: select the scan profile for the scan.
    • Scanner appliance: select External for external scanning of your network (available when using cloud deployment), or select an installed Scanner Appliance for local scanning.
  6. Under the headline, Targets enter the following:
    • Select your target by entering IPs/IP Networks or by choosing a tag.
    • Choose between these two options:
      • Use IP addresses (default)  to can the targets using the IP addresses. 

      • Use host names to scan the targets by translating the host names into their corresponding IP addresses.

9. Click Run scan.

10. Done!

Asset management

Please note that scanning by host name does not impact asset management, as IP is the unique identifier for network targets.
