How do I scan a network target using hostnames?
This article describes how to scan a network target using hostnames. Before you begin, create a scan profile to use for the scan. This lets you scan multiple underlying IP addresses that belong to the specific hostname.
Scan a network target using hostnames
- Log in to Security Center.
- Click Assessments > Scan > New Scan > Network > Vulnerability.
- Under General information, enter the following:
- Name: the name of the scan, e.g., "Standard scan".
- Scan profile: select the scan profile for the scan.
- Scanner appliance: select External for external scanning of your network (available when using cloud deployment), or select an installed Scanner Appliance for local scanning.
- Under Targets, enter the following:
- Select your target by entering IPs/IP networks or by choosing a tag.
- Choose between these two options:
- Use IP addresses (default) to scan the targets using the IP addresses.
- Use hostnames to scan the targets by translating the hostnames into their corresponding IP addresses.
- Click Run scan.
- Done!
Primary hostname
Once a network asset has been discovered through hostname-based scanning, Security Center displays all hostnames found for that asset. You can choose one hostname as the primary hostname to keep your asset records organized and consistent.
How do I view and set a primary hostname for a network asset?
Set a primary hostname:
- Log in to Security Center.
- Click Assets > Hosts & Networks.
- Click Edit on the network asset you want to update.
- Click Network info > Automatic to choose a hostname from the list of discovered names.
- To use a name that is not on the list, click Custom name and enter the name instead.
- Use the radio button next to the hostname to set it as the primary hostname.
- Done!
Asset management
Please note that scanning by hostname does not impact asset management, as IP is the unique identifier for network targets.
